Rover charges sitters and dog walkers a service fee that comes out of every booking — around 20% for most sitters today, though the exact rate can differ depending on when you joined and which plan you're on. If a client pays $50 for a walk, roughly $10 of that goes to Rover before the rest reaches your account. That fee funds the parts of the marketplace you're paying for: getting matched with nearby clients, background checks, and Rover's guarantee program.
There's no way to negotiate the fee per booking while you're operating inside Rover — it's built into how the platform works, not a line item you can ask to waive.
When Rover is worth it
If you're new and don't have a client base yet, Rover's lead flow is genuinely valuable. Showing up when someone nearby searches for a dog walker is hard to replicate on your own in the first few months — 20% of a booking you wouldn't have gotten otherwise is still a net win.
When it stops being worth it
The math changes once most of your bookings are repeat clients — people who already know you, already trust you, and would happily book you directly if you gave them an easy way to. Paying 20% on a client who calls you by name isn't buying a new lead; it's a toll on a relationship you already built.
How sitters go independent
- Keep taking new leads from Rover for as long as they're worth it to you — going independent doesn't mean cutting ties immediately.
- Give repeat clients a direct way to book you — a booking link, a simple form, anything that skips the Rover app.
- Move deposits and communication off Rover too, so the relationship — and the fee-free revenue — is genuinely yours.

Does Rover's fee change based on how long I've been a sitter?
Rover has changed its fee structure over time, and some sitters on older plans pay a different rate than new sign-ups. Enter your actual rate in the calculator above if you know it — this tool never assumes a fixed 20%.
Is the fee the same for boarding, walking, and drop-ins?
Rover applies its service fee as a percentage of the booking total regardless of service type, so the percentage is the same — the dollar amount just scales with what you charge for that booking.
Can I ask a Rover client to pay me directly instead?
Rover's terms restrict moving a Rover-sourced booking off-platform, and this calculator isn't advice to do that. It's aimed at clients who already know you outside of Rover, or ones Rover found for you long enough ago that they'd book you directly today.
